Abstract

This study evaluated the chronic toxicity of ethanolic leaf extract of Datura stramonium (ELEDS) and its amelioration by ethanolic leaf extract of Moringa oleifera (ELEMO) in male Wistar rats. Fifty (50) adult male rats were placed at random, into five groups of 10 rats each and exposed to the following treatments: group I was administered distilled water at 10 mL/kg; group II was administered ELEMO at 200 mg/kg; group III was given ELEDS at 170.4 mg/kg; group 1V was administered ELEDS and then post treated with ELEMO 30 min later; group V was administered ELEDS and then post treated with physostigmine at 0.02 mg/kg 30 min later. The LD50 of ELEDS was found to be 4,260 mg/kg (OECD, 2001). The ELEDS-treated rats showed significant (P < 0.05) decreases in the packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell count (RBC), platelets (PLT), total white blood cell count (WBC) and neutrophils.Whereas, significant (P < 0.05) elevations were observed for serum alanine amino aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the ELEDS- treated group compared to DW and ELEMO. However, the amelioration of these changes by ELEMO on chronic exposure to ELEDS, highlights its potential antidotal effects on D. stramonium toxicity
