Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding graded levels of dried lanneamicrocarpa(LM) leaf meal on the haematological profile of Yankasa Ewes. Twelve (12) Yankasa Ewes were allotted to four (4) dietary treatments. The treatments evaluated were 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% inclusion levels of LMleaf meal in a Completely Randomized Design. The diets were iso- nitrogenous and the trial lasted for eight weeks. The results obtained indicated significant (P<0.05) difference in the values observed for all parameters investigated. RBCand haemoglobin means (7.73[x106 /µl], 11.03g/dl) were significantly higher (P<0.05) in treatment 4 (30% inclusion level). WBC, Lymphocytes and Neutrophils means (9.40 [xl09 /l], 7.50% and 0.50%) were significantly (P>0.05) lower in T1 (0% inclusion level). The result shows higher means value of MCH (46.50[Pg]) in T1 (0% inclusion level) and the lowest means value recorded was Eosinophil (0.50%)in T1 (0% inclusion level) respectively. Most haematological values obtained were within the normal range for sheep. It is concluded that inclusion of lanneamicrocarpa leaf mealin the diet of YankasaEwes up to 30% had no deleterious effect on the haematological parameters evaluated. It is recommended that further study on the feeding potential of lanneamicrocarpashould be conducted on other species of livestock to ascertain the feeding value of same
