Abstract

This study aimed at determining the optimal nutritional availability of maize offal and agro-industrial by products in diets of weaner rabbits. Maize offal was obtained from an agro-industrial market in Jos, Plateau State. Maize offal obtained was subjected to proximate analysis, chemical compositions, amino acid concentrations, and anti-nutritional factors using a standard procedure. The proximate results showed that maize offal contains 91.74% dry matter, 8.26% crude protein, 16.99% crude fibre, 4.28 % ether extract, 4.26% ash, and nitrogen-free extract (66.21%) while calcium and phosphorus values were (0.48 and 0.12%) respectively. The results obtained showed maize offal contain 3.93g/100g and1.66g/100g of lysine and Methionine respectively. Phytate (3.42mg), tannin (1.16mg) trypsin (12.00mg), Haemaglutinin (12.5mg), saponin (15.25mg) and oxalate (25.00mg). From the result obtained for chemical compositions, amino acid concentrations, and anti nutritional factors, it showed maize offal can be used as fed stuff in rabbit production.
