Abstract

Serological detection of Brucella antibodies in camels was carried out at Kano main abattoir in order to
determine the prevalence and also suggest control measures in the study area. A total of 147 serum samples
from camels of different ages and sexes were systematically selected and screened using Rose Bengal plate test
(RBPT) and Serum agglutination test (SAT). From the results, out of the 147 serum samples, 10(6.8%) tested
positive with both RBPT and SAT tests. Seropositivity was higher among camels of age group 4-7years 6(7.7%) compared to 1-4years 4(5.7%). Prevalence based on sex was higher in females 6 (13.3%) than males 4(3.9%). The study has indicated that Brucella infection exists among camels slaughtered at Kano main abattoir. It is hereby recommended that abattoir workers involved in handling and slaughtering of camels should wear protective clothing and camels should be tested and thoroughly examined at lairage for clinical evidence of Brucella infection before approval for slaughter.
