NANOTECHNOLOGY AND ANIMAL HEALTH: A GROWING SYNERGY

Abstract

Nanotechnology has been long employed as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent in the human medicine and
material fields for a while, though their use in the field of animals‟ health and production is growing poorly and
comparatively new especially in developing nations like Nigeria. It can bring the solution to many challenges
faced in animal health and production. There are many Nano systems such as carbon nanotubes, dendrimers,
functionalized fullerenes, liposomes, metallic nanoparticles, polymeric micelles, polymeric Nanospheres,
polymer-coated nanocrystals, and Nanoshells. These can address many animal health and development
problems. Nanotechnology will have a tremendous impact as we advance. There is a serious need to equip
agriculture researchers, scientists, engineers and biologists to work at the cellular and molecular levels for
animal health benefits. This will boost the efficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases for
improved protein supply and food sustainability
