PERFORMANCE AND WATER INTAKE OF BROILER CHICKENS ON DIFFERENT WATER TASTES

Résumé

One hundred and twenty day-old broiler chicks (Arbor acre) were used to investigate the effects of different water tastes on the weight gain, feed intake and water consumption pattern in broiler chickens. There were 4 treatment groups (tasteless, sweet, bitter and sour tasting water). Ten birds were allocated to each replicate and each treatment was replicated 3 times. Results indicated that water tastes significantly (P<0.05) influenced the total weight gain, total feed intake, total water intake, daily feed intake and daily water intake. Birds on sour and sweet tasting water had the highest significant (P<0.05) values (2.21+0.12 and 2.20+0.14kg/b/d), (102.23+2.75 and 100.25+5.12kg/b/d), (5.09+0.14 and 4.91+0.25kg/b), (10.34+£0.51 and 10.6740.43ml/b) and (210.98+10.42 and 217.72+8.86ml/b/d) than their counterparts on bitter tasting water for all the aforementioned parameters. It was concluded that broiler chickens had flair for sour and sweet tasting water but disliked bitter tasting water.
